Take strokes off your game: Expert explains value of yoga for golfers of all levels

Namaste, golfers! While you may be more used to talking tee times, your best shot and the newest club you can’t wait to get your hands on, it’s time we brought yoga into the conversation.

Maybe this is the first time anyone’s suggested yoga to you. While you may see it as “not for you” or something out of your comfort zone, here’s the thing: It could shave strokes off your golf game!

Recently, we talked with Charm City Yoga’s Allison Korycki, 28, about how yoga can benefit golfers. Korycki is the director of operations and a yoga instructor at Charm City Yoga. If you want more information on her, visit charmcityyoga.com.

“At Charm City Yoga, we see a ton of athletes, including current and former Ravens like Hall of Famer Jon Ogden, Orioles players, runners, basketball players, cyclists and golfers. In fact, our upcoming workshops like Yoga for Athletes and Yoga for Golfers are in high demand,” Korycki said. “We have even added a Yoga for Athletes program where we send yoga teachers to public and private high schools and universities in the greater Baltimore area to help teams engage in holistic conditioning and improve performance. We teach swim teams, soccer teams and lacrosse players alike.”

“Yoga not only builds strength, stamina and flexibility, but it also decreases injuries and promotes healing. Athletes will greatly benefit from the increased reaction time, mental focus and clarity yoga brings,” Korycki said.

While physical performance is a huge part of both golf and yoga, as anyone knows, both sports take mental strength, concentration and determination. Arnold Palmer said it best when he said:

“The whole secret to mastering the game of golf – and this applies to the beginner as well as the pro – is to cultivate a mental approach to the game that will enable you to shrug off the bad days, keep patient and know in your heart that sooner or later you will be back on top.”

Korycki noted that yoga will help golfers mentally on the course. What they learn on a mat can translate to the green, from breathing techniques to clearing their minds.

“When you have control of your mind, you can remove mental blockages and unlock your greatest potential to show up fully for yourself and your teammates,” she said.
